-Louis LaBrie-
"A Closer Look"

Cambridge Art Gallery is proud to exclusively represent worldwide Louis LaBrie, one of America’s finest Realist artists who is becoming recognized as one of America’s master painters. As Cambridge Art Gallery works to bring about a greater awareness of his work, LaBrie is ascending to a level of recognition that his talents merit, thereby creating a demand for his one of a kind paintings. LaBrie seeks to challenge himself; his focus is to convey a specific sense of time and place in his work so to transport his audience to the very location that inspired him, telling a story with a solitary image. When struck by particularly moving scenery, LaBrie begins composing the work immediately in his mind’s eye and works quickly to obtain an image from which to work.

LaBrie has a deep connection with the natural world and is compelled to portray the beauty he derives from the landscape that he knows so well. He explains that, “Being a California native, I have an affinity and respect for our oceans the bounty they hold . . . and the fragility of that bounty.” LaBrie captures what he loves and endeavors to do so without embellishment; he strives to give his paintings the sense of intrigue that so many artists today are lacking, thereby completing it. Confessing his love for abstraction, he incorporates it into his paintings, capturing every nuance in his complex imagery through textures and patterns. LaBrie’s signature and intricate technique requires layers upon layers of paint before finally achieving his masterly realist image. The final result is the beautifully complex emotional scenes: skies are heavy yet weightless, lit with an ethereal setting, the sun alongside contrasting flat and somehow hovering images that engross but yet captivate its audience.
LaBrie says that, “Nature’s been short-changed for a long time. I felt that way even as a child, my greatest reward is knowing that my work has an effect on the lives of the viewers. If I can change their outlook to help them realize what they are truly looking at, and appreciate it in a new light, then my work takes on a new and deeper meaning, fulfilling an even greater level.”

Cambridge Art Gallery proudly exhibited LaBrie's work in a Solo Exhibition from
November 6-26, 2008.
